Two Become One Flesh
“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” Gen 2:24 (NIV)
We have all heard the sermon on purity, even in public school they teach our children about all the diseases that can accompany being promiscuous. But have we ever really asked God why He wants us to stay pure, before marriage and during our marriage? There is a spiritual side to sex and becoming one flesh with the person you are experiencing it with. The Holy Spirit gave me a visual off taking two pieces of paper and gluing them together. After the glue has set, we would probably treat those two pieces of paper as one. But let us say that those two pieces of paper are two people involved in casual sex. The glue didn’t fully set, the couple didn’t really commit to each other, and they break apart. We can try to pull the two pieces of paper apart, but part of one paper will end up being stuck to the other. We will probably create holes in the two pieces of paper where they were permanently stuck to each other. Picture those holes as part of your soul, lost into the other person you had casual sex with. You will never be able to get the piece of paper into its original condition, nor will you ever be able to get back the part of your soul you gave in a night of passion. And of course, divorce creates even bigger holes in our souls as the “glue” has had plenty of time to set. God always gives us commands that are for our benefit. He sees the holes we create in our souls when we give our purity away to another. The enemy hates mankind and has come to destroy. It’s his idea to get us to violate our purity. We don’t see the holes in our souls like we see a wound to our flesh, but we can feel that hole. The enemy wants to tear us apart, but God wants to keep us whole. God was serious when He said He created them to be one flesh and that He hates divorce. He was serious because of the deep love He has for His creation, His people. Abide in God’s love and stay true in your purity.
“I hate divorce,” says the God of Israel. GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies says, “I hate the violent dismembering of the ‘one flesh’ of marriage.” So watch yourselves. Don’t let your guard down. Don’t cheat. Mal 2:16 (The Message)
