Love Your Spouse More Than Yourself
Marriage is supposed to be a reflection of Christ’s love for the church. We are the bride and He is the bridegroom. God pours His love down on us and we give Him all honor and respect. But how are we really doing in marriages today to reflect the truth of God’s relationship with us? So often we see husbands loving other women instead of their own wives. We see women disrespecting their husbands in public and who can imagine what goes on behind closed doors. We are a pretty poor reflection at times. God expects us to respect Him as God, yet He knows we fall short every day, but that does not stop Him from flowing His love down on us continually. His love is not conditional on our response. We are told in Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God knew what we needed and He gave it to us long before we turned back and gave anything back to Him. So, coming back to our marriages in this world, do we as husbands love our wives even when they don’t deserve it or even think they need it? And wives, do we respect our husbands when they don’t seem to need it or deserve it? As we grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ and really understand what the Father did for us, our response should be an overflowing to those around us especially our spouses. When we have the mind of Christ, we don’t look at our spouse and think, “When he/she gets his/her act together, then I’ll start treating him/her as he/she deserves.” We start seeing our spouse as God sees each of us, broken and in desperate need of a Savior. Our response to our spouse should always be on what God has done for us. If you are finding that you are falling desperately short in how you are treating your spouse, don’t try harder. Spend more time with God and let Him change your inside so your actions will reflect that truth.
“We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.” 2Cor 4:7 (NLT)
